Memorial for Sunhwa Jeanne Serruys

Join us to honor Sunhwa, a foundational member of the Zen Center for over 20 years, & ordained as a lay Dharma Teacher.   Sunhwa passed November 13. As she had requested, our Abbot has been conducting a traditional 49-day ceremony, with morning & evening meditation, chanting & reading from the American Book of the Dead, daily at 7am & 7pm.

December 31 marks the 49th day after death, and family & friends, and members will gather for the final reading & ceremonial burning of her photo & personal affect which has been on the altar.  We will also scatter Sunhwa's ashes around the green roof & gardens, as was her wish.

Sunhwa began zen in her 60s and quickly began an apprenticeship with the Abbot & the zen path.  She came to sit or help around the Center almost daily for many years.  An editor by day, & artist by night, friends knew of her love to write poetry, quilt & sew.   Her sincerity, humility & love of spiritual freedom shine still.
