WILD MIND, WILD EARTH: AN EVENING OF ZEN & ECOLOGY at the DIA
WITH TREASURED AUTHOR, TRANSLATOR & POET DAVID HINTON
The arts were considered forms of Ch’an (Zen) Buddhist practice in ancient China, and mountain landscape was integral to that practice. Hinton will show how this integration works, and how Zen as a spiritual practice is recognizing the kinship of mind and nature, one that must be reanimated, seeing through our modern views and ways of devaluing & exploiting our planet, if we are to end her destruction. How ancient Chinese spirituality & modern western environmental thought flow together at this critical juncture in human history is at the heart of Hinton’s new book, Wild Mind, Wild Earth: Our Place in the Sixth Extinction. The evening will be a launch party for the book.
Detroit Zen Center monks will offer a guided meditation as part of this program and facilitate a conversation with Hinton and audience members after his presentation. (75 min.) This event will also launch this new book, with an opportunity for a book signing.
We are sponsoring David Hinton for his full visit to Detroit.
