About the Event
A 5 day immersion in zen as a way of life.
Zen retreats are a centuries-old method of immersing ourselves with a schedule, meditation practice, community & teacher. The aim of a zen retreat is to wake up from the illusion that we are an independent, separate self, that often finds itself troubled in so many ways.
Through the method of zen -- which is a sincere attempt to live with awareness, slow down & avoid negative habit patterns -- we can experience, at least taste, our potential for spiritual freedom, by having our own direct experience of our true self, far beyond the limited self we think ourselves to be.
"To engage in the activity of the present moment, wholeheatedly and without reservation, is at the heart of zen practice. It is within 'just this' ordinary moment that we manifest true self, and realize freedom". --Abbot Hwalson Sunim
Guided by Zen monk & teacher 82 year old Hwalson Sunim, and his senior student Myungju, the daily schedule inculdes morning meditation, preparation of organic, vegan meals, taken together, simple manual work projects & evening meditation. Private interviews & instruction in meditation with the Abbot are included.
Applications required for first time retreaters at the Detroit Zen Center.
